Wltp: a new test for European certification of fuel consumption, carbon dioxide and pollutant emissions


In order to put the vehicle on the market, a series of tests are carried out to verify whether it meets the requirements. Tests to assess fuel consumption, carbon dioxide and pollutant emissions are conducted in the laboratory and are based on a specific driving cycle. In this way, the test is repeatable and the results are comparable. This is important because only laboratory tests that follow standardized and repeatable procedures allow consumers to compare different models.



On September 1, 2017, the new wltp came into effect in Europe and will gradually replace the new NEDC agreement.


NEDC (new European driving cycle): the European driving cycle used so far to measure fuel consumption and emissions of passenger cars and light commercial vehicles. The first European driving cycle came into effect in 1970 and is known as the city route. In 1992, it was also considered to be an out of city phase and has been used to measure consumption and carbon dioxide emissions since 1997. However, the composition of this cycle is no longer consistent with the current driving style and the distance traveled on different types of roads. The average speed of NEDC is only 34 km / h, the acceleration is low, and the maximum speed is only 120 km / h.


Wltp procedure: wltp uses the new globally harmonized light vehicle test cycle (wltc) to measure fuel consumption, carbon dioxide and pollutant emissions for passenger cars and light commercial vehicles. The new agreement aims to provide customers with more real data and better reflect the daily use of vehicles.


The new wltp program features a more dynamic driving profile and more significant acceleration. The maximum speed increased from 120 to 131.3 km / h, the average speed was 46.5 km / h, the total cycle time was 30 minutes, 10 minutes more than the previous NEDC. The distance doubled from 11 to 23.25 km. The wltp test consists of four parts, depending on the highest speed: low (up to 56.5 km / h), medium (up to 76.6 km / h), high (up to 97.4 km / h), super high (up to 131.3 km / h). These parts of the cycle simulate urban and suburban driving and driving on roads and highways outside the city. The program also considers all vehicle options that affect aerodynamics, rolling resistance, and vehicle mass to produce CO2 values that reflect individual vehicle characteristics.

Transition from NEDC to wltp

By the end of 2020, fuel consumption and carbon dioxide emission values of wltp and NEDC will appear in vehicle documents. In addition, some countries may continue to use NEDC data for financial purposes. From 2021, wltp data will be the only consumption / CO2 emission value of all vehicles. Used vehicles will not be affected by this procedure and will maintain their certified NEDC values.

Road consumption and emission of passenger cars


The new wltp test program is more representative of current driving conditions than the NEDC program, but it does not take into account all possible situations, including the impact of driving style specific to each driver.




Therefore, there are still differences between the emissions and consumption measured in the laboratory and the emissions and consumption generated by the use of vehicles in the real world. The extent of such differences will depend on driving behaviors, the use of circuit board systems (such as air conditioning), traffic and weather conditions, which are characteristics of each geographical area and each driver.


Therefore, only standardized laboratory tests can obtain values that can compare vehicles and different models in a fair way.

The new wltp program will provide more realistic criteria for comparing fuel consumption and CO2 emission values of different models, as it is designed to better reflect real driving behavior and take into account the specific technical characteristics of each model and version, including optional equipment.
